The Accesa Archaeological Park, realized under the scientific direction of Professor Giovannangelo Camporeale of Firenze University and financed by the Massa Marittima Town Council, the Mountain Community “Colline Metallifere” and the European Community with the collaboration of the Archaeological Superintendent, was opened to the public in June 2001. Well signposted footpaths and information panels for each archaeological area and for each construction within that the area guide the visitor along the extremely interesting (also from a naturalistic point of view) trail. There are several equipped rest areas along the route.
Trail time: approx. two and a half hours.
Difficulty: none.

Situated near the picturesque lake of Karst origin, the Accesa Archaeological Park covers a vast area thickly forested by holm-oak, flowering ash and oak trees. Archaeological research, beginning in the 1930s and methodically conducted by Firenze University since 1980, has brought to light the remains of an area inhabited in the 6th century by the Etruscans in connection with the exploitation of the nearby mineral deposits and organised in various quarters, each with its own necropolis. A visit to the Park begins with quarter A and proceeds to quarter B, C and D (quarter E is currently being excavated), and merits being completed by a trip to the Archaeological Museum of Massa Marittima, where items discovered in the excavated areas are exhibited.
