According to local legend, Accesa lake was formed on July 26, in the year 1218, in the place where once stood wide wheat field. It was a day dedicated to rest and prayer in honor of St. Ann, the reapers’ patron saint, but that year the harvest was so promising that some of the reapers decided not to observe the holiday, beginning the harvest on that very day. Toward noon, with reaping going at full force, the sky suddenly darkened and the earth began to quake; a huge chasm opened in the plain, swallowing men and animals, and a torrential rain began to pour, while high tongues of fire rose from underground. When the storm abated, instead of the wheat fields there was a small dark green body of water, Accesa lake, which, according to tradition, owes its name to the reddish flashes that still today seem to rise from its depth every year on July 26.
