Quarter A

Quarter A covers approximately 6000 m² and is surrounded by a functional artificial hardpan that keeps rain water from pooling. Built at the beginning of the 6th century B.C., it was inhabited for approximately one century and voluntarily abandoned for unknown causes, most probably associated with occurrences in Vetulonia, to which the Accesa community was always linked. The quarter consists of ten compounds of various sizes, many of them rebuilt more than once because of frequent fires and collapses caused by landslides. All that is left of the buildings are the foundation walls build with rough-hewn local stone; floors were made of dirt, layered over a gravel hardpan, to protect the dwelling from humidity. Findings from inside the building show that the compounds were used exclusively as dwellings, but it has not been possible, except in rare occasions, to determine the exact purpose of every room. The quarter’s economy was based on mining and based on archeological data it is believed that it may have been inhabited by an upper middle social class, perhaps the mining managers and administrators.
