The Massa Marittima museum system consists of ten museums and historical sites and the Accesa Lake Archeological Park. The system, recently instituted, forms a body that unites all these entities under a single “banner”, with a single technical and scientific management and a single service management entrusted to a cooperative.

The museums and historical sites of Massa Marittima began with a mining museum, believed created in 1851 by Theodor Haupt, of whom very little is known. In any case, the Haupt collections ended up in the Town Museum, founded in 1867 together with the Library. The Town Museum, initially consisting of scientific and naturalistic exhibits, over time added to and diversified its holdings so much that it was split into several museums. Some grew from what initially were the various sections of the Town Museum, such as the Picture Gallery, the Archeological Museum and the Risorgimento Museum, while others were created independently in subsequent years, these including the Rural Culture Museum (1979), the Mining Museum (1980) and the Museum of Mining Art and History (1985). The Torre del Candeliere, an important medieval monument in the Massa area, was declared a historical site in 1985 as in the 1990’s were an ancient oil mill site from the late eighteenth century and the re-creation, with antique tools acquired by the Municipality, of a carpentry shop. The "Angiolino Martini" Contemporary Ar tExhibit Center opened in 2000, with a collection of 750 works by 20th century artists donated by Martini to the Municipality of Massa Marittima. The following year saw the inauguration of the Accesa Etruscan Archeological Park. The completion of a Museum of Religious Art is underway and it will house works from the Picture Gallery that are currently in storage, together with other masterpieces belonging to Massa churches.
